Nano aquarium

A nano aquarium is a small tank, generally considered anything under about twenty gallons, though the exact cutoff varies between hobbyists and manufacturers. Nano tanks are popular for desks, apartments and multi-tank setups where a full-size aquarium is not practical, and they are common choices for shrimp, small fish species and compact planted layouts.

Small water volume is the main tradeoff that comes with a nano tank, since temperature, pH and nutrient levels can shift faster in a small volume of water than in a larger tank, which makes consistent maintenance more important rather than less. Equipment made specifically for nano tanks, such as compact filters, small heaters and clip-on lights, tends to perform better than scaled-down versions of gear designed for bigger aquariums, which can be oversized or awkward to fit.

When setting up a nano tank, plan the bioload carefully, since it is easy to overstock a small volume of water without realizing it, and stick to a more frequent water change schedule than a larger tank might need. A common mistake is treating a nano tank as an easier starter option because of its size, when the smaller margin for error in water quality often makes it a more demanding tank to keep stable than a mid-size aquarium.
