# Why Fish Gasp at the Surface in Planted Aquariums

Fish gathering at the water surface, breathing rapidly or gulping air are signs of distress that need attention quickly. In planted aquariums, the most common cause is too much injected CO2 or not enough oxygen, particularly at night or after changes to equipment. Other causes include poor water quality and high temperature. Acting fast can prevent losses.

## Act immediately

If fish are gasping, increase surface agitation right away by raising the filter outflow, adding an air stone or pointing a powerhead toward the surface. Turn off CO2 injection if you use it.

Test water for ammonia and nitrite, and do a partial water change with temperature-matched, conditioned water if levels are elevated. Observe fish closely over the next hours.

## Too much CO2

Injected CO2 helps plants grow, but excess CO2 makes it harder for fish to breathe. Drop checkers showing yellow indicate high CO2, and a sudden increase after adjusting the regulator or changing bubble rate is a warning sign.

Increase CO2 slowly and observe fish behaviour after each adjustment. Use a solenoid timer so CO2 turns on about an hour before lights and off an hour or more before lights go out.

## Low oxygen at night

Plants produce oxygen during the day, but at night they consume oxygen along with fish and bacteria. Densely planted tanks with little surface movement can become oxygen poor overnight.

Running an air stone at night or increasing surface agitation with a timer helps. Surface skimmers remove oily films that reduce gas exchange.

## Temperature and water quality

Warmer water holds less oxygen. During heat waves or with heaters stuck on, oxygen levels drop while fish need more of it. Check the thermometer and keep temperatures within the species' preferred range.

Decaying plant matter, uneaten food and overdue filter maintenance increase oxygen consumption and ammonia. Remove debris, clean filters without killing beneficial bacteria and avoid overfeeding.

## Other causes

Gill parasites, disease and poisoning can also cause gasping. If water parameters, oxygen and CO2 appear normal, look for other symptoms such as flashing, red gills or white spots and research treatments carefully.

Some fish, like bettas and gouramis, naturally breathe air from the surface, which is normal behaviour. Knowing your fish's behaviour helps distinguish normal habits from distress.
